1,374 DAYS: MY LIFE WITH LONG COVID
Posted by Armando Brito Mendes | Filed under Data Science, visualização
Uma boa estória com excelentes gráficos
By Giorgia Lupi
Ms. Lupi is an information designer who has been experiencing symptoms of long Covid for over three years.
Dec. 14, 2023
Every morning, I wake up in my Brooklyn apartment, and for two seconds, I can remember the old me. The me without pain, the me with energy, the me who could do whatever she wanted.
Then I’m shoved back into my new reality. As I fully come into consciousness, I feel dizzy, faint and nauseated. Pain pulses throughout my body, and my limbs feel simultaneously as heavy as concrete and weak as jelly. It feels as if a machine were squeezing my skull, and extreme exhaustion overtakes me.
These sensations have been a daily occurrence, with few exceptions, for the past three years and nine months. In the morning my boyfriend will be the one making coffee for us. He will run all of our errands. He will cook and clean. He now does all the things I used to do, the things I can’t do anymore.

How to get started with data visualization
Posted by Armando Brito Mendes | Filed under lições, materiais para profissionais, visualização
Um excelente texto sobre como se tornar um bom artista de visualizações de dados
Sometimes, I get emails asking me “how to get started in data visualization.” Maybe you’re one of the people wondering about that. Maybe you found a book full of data vis in a bookstore, followed somebody who makes data vis on social media, noticed that you love playing with the “charts” feature in Excel, or just really like these data visualizations that newsrooms are creating.
And now you want to create them yourself but don’t know where to get started.
This article tries to give some very practical advice on your next steps. If you ask ten people for that advice, you’ll likely get ten different answers. This is mine:
1 Find out what you like about data visualizations
2 Don’t worry too much about data or tools
3 Start to visualize data
4 Get better at visualizing data
It’s based on the experiences I’ve had and what’s worked for me. I hope some of these ideas will help you to find your own path.

Beyond the Top 1000 Names
Posted by Armando Brito Mendes | Filed under data sets
Base de dados sobre nomes dos norte-americanos ao longo do tempo
To provide popular names and maintain an acceptable performance level on our servers, we provide only the top 1000 names through our forms. However, we provide almost all names for researchers interested in naming trends.
To safeguard privacy, we exclude from these files certain names that would indicate, or would allow the ability to determine, names with fewer than 5 occurrences in any geographic area. We provide these data on both a national and state-specific basis, in two separate collections of files, each zipped into a single file. The format of the data in the three file collections is described in a “readme” file contained in the respective zip files.
- National data (7Mb)
- State-specific data (21Mb)
- Territory-specific data (300Kb)

Fonte de dados do census dos EUA
Decennial Census P.L. 94-171 Redistricting Data Summary Files
Includes the official data, documentation, and support materials to assist in accessing P.L. 94-171 Redistricting Data.
2020 Census Apportionment Results
On August 12, we released the redistricting data to the states and the public. States may use these data in redrawing congressional, legislative, and local district boundaries. The Census Bureau will also deliver the final redistricting data toolkit to all states and the public by September 30. COVID-19-related delays and prioritizing the delivery of these apportionment results delayed our original plan.
More 2020 Census population results will be available later including statistics on age, sex, race and ethnicity, and details about the center of population. The results for the U.S. Island Areas will also be provided in a separate release at a later date.
