What happens when we separate human beings from the environment in which they evolved? Can people be healthy without nature? The results have beenbleak.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935118303323?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Countless studies<\/a>&nbsp;have shown that people who spend less time in nature die younger and suffer higher rates of mental and physical ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a really, really strong case for proximity to nature influencing health in a really big way,\u201d said Jared Hanley, the co-founder and CEO of NatureQuant, an Oregon start-up whose mission is to discover what kind of nature best supports human health, map where it is and persuade people to spend more time in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using satellite imagery and data on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/08901171231210806b?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dozens of factors<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 including air and noise pollution, park space, open water and tree canopy \u2014 NatureQuant has distilled the elements of health-supporting nature into a single variable called NatureScore.
