Some are actual rules, and some are <a href=\"https:\/\/flowingdata.com\/2010\/11\/15\/learn-the-rules-of-data-graphics-so-you-can-bend-them\/\">suggestions to help you make choices<\/a>. Many of the former can be broken, if that&#8217;s what the data dictates and you <a href=\"http:\/\/flowingdata.com\/2010\/03\/20\/graphical-perception-learn-the-fundamentals-first\/\">know what you&#8217;re doing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, there are rules\u2014usually for specific chart types meant to be  read in a specific way and with few exceptions\u2014that you shouldn&#8217;t break.
